Jane Canning

When I want to sound posh, I call myself a ceramicist. But really, I am just a potter and I love making pots on the wheel (practice may make perfect, but not yet for me). Is pottery a craft or an art? What is the difference? I try to combine the two by making beautiful, exciting pieces for everyday use – form and function. Recently I have leaned more towards the form, producing decorative or commemorative plates, but there will still be many functional bowls in my display. I had hoped seventeen years as a chemistry teacher would help inform the technology of glazing and firing. That hasn’t worked out. There are so many variables it is almost impossible to predict what will come out of the kiln; pottery seems to be more alchemy than science. However, my background in teaching means I retain pleasure in helping children explore clay, real clay, that is really mucky.
