- Karen Edwards | North Somerset Arts
Karen Edwards Ceramics Karen Edwards Ceramics Karen Edwards Ceramics 1/1 Professional potter since 2005, making distinctive handbuilt frostproof sculptured, planters and decorative items for gardens and interiors. Karen's ceramics combine her interests in texture, landscape and plants, from tiny pebbles to tall abstract forms. The colour palette is deliberately earthy and natural, to complement plants rather than compete with them. Clay surfaces are carved, inlaid, scraped, polished or impressed during the making stage to give interesting textures bich are then enhanced with oxide washes, slips (liquid clay) and glazes. Karen regularly exhibits her unique work in prestigious sculpture garden events and is happy to discuss commission or personalisation ideas. Her large studio at Barley Wood Walled Garden, Wrington, always has a display of finished pieces for sale and is open throughout the year by appointment. - Nick Whiting | North Somerset Arts
Nick Whiting Sculpture Nick Whiting Sculpture Nick Whiting Sculpture 1/1 My sculpting life has taken a dramatic and new direction in the last two years. First, I was asked to do a statue of St Francis of Assisi for a friend. The outcome of this is that the figure I produced now lives in the communal gardens of a retirement home and is much loved by all who go to see him. Whilst doing this I was given a commission by a school in Accra, Ghana for three life size busts to represent the three people who founded the school 24 years ago. The school has established itself and is now very highly regarded in the education world. They are currently building an extension to the school and the busts will have a special part in the new building - cast in bronze, to be on permanent display for evermore! - Chris Holden | North Somerset Arts
Chris Holden Painting/Drawing Chris Holden Painting/Drawing Chris Holden Painting/Drawing 1/1 Fine art degree course at art school in the 1960s. Then trained as a paintings conservator/restorer at the Tate Gallery in London, leading to a 35 year full time career there. On retirement became involved in the anti-war movement - the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq and motivated to try and use art to make aware and communicate the truth about what was learnt as an anti-war activist from numerous differing sources. Essentially, the art became 'political'. This felt important and normal to do this, as in the 1960s was a time of significant change; - the cold war, nuclear weapons proliferation and testing, plus the Vietnam War, which politicised many of his generation. Also family background upbringing had an influence. They were quite radical and progressive, sympathetic to the Quakers. Chris was educated at an independent co-educational Quaker boarding school from the age of 12. Father was a ww2 conscientious objector & a grandmother who had been a suffragette in the early part of the 20th Century. An uncle who had been on the front line and gassed in ww1, spent the rest of his life helping children internationally affected by war. The activist art continues today engaging with the truth about serious issues; conflicts, environment and social/political. 'Political' art has often been devalued and marginalised.
