Wendy Hope Mixed Media Wendy Hope Mixed Media Wendy Hope Mixed Media 1/1 Wendy Hope spent her first career bringing creativity to schools, as a teacher and head teacher. She was awarded the Artsmark Gold Award by the Arts Council before moving on to develop her work as an artist and writer. As well as drawing, painting and textiles, Wendy creates large scale sculptures using glass from Murano and neon gas - not LEDs. Inspired by her sketches of dancers and by themes such as Memories and Time, the glass is handcrafted over hot flames to her design. Infusing the glass with gases produces stunning coloured lights which Wendy mounts onto a background of steel or natural wood. Artefacts are often added to enhance the theme and these can be personal to the client to ensure every artwork is original. These artworks are perfect for large walls and staircases and bring a Wow! to homes and businesses. HopeNeon artworks were exhibited in the OXO Tower Wharf on London’s South Bank in 2023. Description of North Somerset Arts, including the present Committee members and a link to Membership applications. North Somerset Arts is a not for profit organisation promoting creative arts and artists in the North Somerset area. MEMBERSHIP About North Somerset Arts Supporting and Promoting Arts in North Somerset North Somerset Arts (NSA) was founded in 2002 as the first community-led arts not-for-profit organisation in North Somerset. From inception, the objective of NSA was to promote artistic and cultural activities by professional and amateur artists, in order to increase public involvement and awareness of the arts within North Somerset. Annual General Meeting Our AGM is held once a year in a North Somerset location. Our most recent AGM took place in Folk Hall Portishead on 27th August 2024. The meeting minutes can be found on the forum page, accessible for NSA members. Information on the next event is to be confirmed, it is an opportunity to have your say about how North Somerset Arts is run and have input into some of the decisions that are made and events we run. The Organisation North Somerset Arts is a volunteer led organisation made up of a Management Committee, and one part time member of staff. Our History Ever since its inception in 2002, North Somerset Arts has benefitted from the passionate commitment of local artists and supporters, working together to build a cultural identity for our area, by delivering a biennial Arts Week, exhibitions and other artistic and learning opportunities. NSA has always been a grassroots organisation, arising as it did in the early days of the newly formed North Somerset Unitary Authority. Artists began to seek opportunities to reflect and celebrate the community in which they lived and worked, rather than looking to the conurbations of Bath or Bristol. With considerable help from North Somerset Council the first countywide Arts Week was organised in 2003 and has been held every two years since. Sadly, since the austerity measures enforced in 2008, NSC has withdrawn much of its support for the Arts. As with most artistic organisations, funding and sustainability have always been a major issue and limiting factor. Despite this, NSA has grown steadily since 2002, changing from an unincorporated voluntary organisation to a CIO, charitable incorporated organisation. We now benefit from the help of a paid administrator, though all other posts are voluntary. The difficulty in achieving sustainable funding does have some beneficial side effects. Our main benefactors are our artists and supporters, which means that we must build a strong local artistic community and deliver events and opportunities especially tailored for them, whilst striving for excellence, breadth of vision and greater accessibility to the arts for all of the community. All our events are designed to be open and available to creative people throughout North Somerset and to attract visitors from both within and beyond county boundaries. The spark that was lit by those early Arts Weeks is now unstoppable. Artists in our area are now in touch with each other, new collaborations and opportunities are happening all the time. In towns and villages, existing art clubs are strengthened and new ones formed. So an arts scene unique to us, that reflects who we are and where we come from is being built. Our watchwords are 'engage, create, evolve' so we hope to support creativity throughout North Somerset. Newcomers are always welcome to NSA, there are regular Arts Meets, (social, networking and learning opportunities,) the biennial Arts Week and an Open Exhibition in the non arts week year as well as plenty of one off opportunities. She originally trained as a sculptor working with wood and steel and has an Honours Degree in Fine Art and a PGCE in Art, Design & Technology, eventually transferring to glass after an inspirational time in the USA. Claire has used her artistic skills to become a successful educator within the glass field and is a regular masterclass teacher at Warm Glass UK and West Dean College. She has also taught extensively across Europe and most recently at Pittsburgh Glass Center. Her glass has been selected for prestigious exhibitions within the UK, including London Glassblowing, The National Glass Centre and The British Glass Biennale. In February 2020 her installation “In Search of a Peace” was purchased by the Imagine Museum in Florida for their permanent collection. Her love of the landscape is present in much of her work, from unique jewellery to installation and glass wall art. Hannah Vigneron Administrator I started making pottery in 2019 after visiting North Somerset Arts Week. Seeing so many different artforms inspired me to take a class and I haven't looked back since! My work is mostly wheel-thrown. I enjoy smooth clean forms that provide a canvas for my glaze combinations. I am fascinated by the chemistry of glazes and love to create my own recipes and experiment with different colours and effects. I aim to reproduce some of the vibrant colours found in the natural world - from stunning sunsets to the Northern Lights. Each combination is rooted in a particular memory. I hope that using my pieces will make your day just a little bit more special! Caroline Wait Treasurer Caroline is an artist who works with enamelled copper and mixed media to create her ornamental pieces. She has been enamelling for over 15 years after attending a short course where she fell in love with the versatility of enamelling. She uses its bright vibrant colours to produce pieces with a quirky appeal. During lockdown she experimented with mixed media sculpture and has enjoyed exploring a new medium. She likes to combine these individual pieces with unusual objects, she can often be found in the old tool and book sections of fairs looking for inspiration. Susannah Crook Social Media Using earth and botanical pigments, many of which are foraged for or grown locally, Susannah creates paintings which evoke the geology at the water's edge; in particular the Severn Estuary. Susannah taught art professionally for 25 years, both in the UK and overseas, and has been an active member of North Somerset Arts since 2016. She has exhibited widely and runs workshops highlighting the use of natural pigments. Suzy Hannabuss Committee Member I am a lampwork artist and produce my own handmade glass beads. I began producing my own handmade glass beads just under 20 years ago when I took a class at The Glass Hub in Bath. I fell in love with lampworking straight away. I use my beads to make one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery and other glass decorations. Steve Peel Website Steve Peel is a local artist based in Portishead painting in water mixable oils. His paintings are inspired by landscapes in Bristol, the UK, and France. Steve presently works in the space industry and so is also inspired by telescope images of space, such as the Pillars of Creation captured by the NASA Hubble and James Webb Telescopes. Steve studies art at Folk House in Bristol where he has also exhibited his works. Sophie Munting Committee Member

Julie Mainstone Painting/Drawing Julie Mainstone Painting/Drawing Julie Mainstone Painting/Drawing 1/1 Julie is an award winning professional artist with a lifelong passion for painting. She was born in Bristol and has lived in the area all her life. Her Mother was the earliest artistic influence and her passion for painting in Watercolour started in her mid-teens studying briefly alongside her Mum with Stained Glass Artist James Crombie. They moved on and discovered the medium had a whole lot more to offer from Yatton based Watercolour Artist and Tutor Brian Parrish. It was at this point that her passion was truly ignited and throughout her life she has pushed boundaries and tried to get inside this enigmatic medium. In the mid 80’s Julie started work as an Audio Visual designer and soon progressed to managing the in house AV team for a large Financial Services company based in Bristol. Her career progressed and when the team expanded to include all the creative services for the group. She managed the whole team of designers who were also responsible for the design and print of the company’s whole suite of literature. Alongside her career, Julie continued to paint and exhibit locally and at craft fairs across the South West and she became an active member of both Clevedon and Clifton Art Clubs. 22 years later, when changes to the company structure were brought in, Julie took the opportunity of redundancy and set up an Arts & Crafts business based in Nailsea. It was here that she started teaching. The shop soon became a Winsor & Newton Premier Art Centre due to the range of products stocked and Julie was able to use her knowledge and experience to guide and advise customers. Sadly a recession and rising overhead costs meant that the retail side of her business had to close. She continued painting, teaching and exhibiting alongside caring for her Father until he passed away. In 2016 she attended a workshop with Trevor Waugh and enrolled on an Atelier style Foundation Course. Under Trevor’s guidance her painting skills flourished and her style developed and finally in 2017 she took the step to become professional. Julie is currently a member of North Somerset Arts and takes part in the biennial North Somerset Arts Week. She has become known locally for Watercolour knowledge and her love of painting en plein air where she feels in touch with nature – the South West coastline has a special place in her heart. She is always searching for the story in her subject and her intuitive style is loose yet traditional with contemporary influences. Whilst Watercolour remains her greatest passion, she does explore other mediums, mixing them up if the subject calls for a more experimental and adventurous approach to tell the story. Her art is led by her heart not her head. She tries to portray how the subject makes her feel rather than getting too bogged down in accuracy. Julie’s own classes are now based at Portbury Church where she is also the artist in residence. She also visits other art groups around the region to teach ad hoc sessions and run workshops. She is one of the founding members of @art6explore – a collaboration of North Somerset Artists who formed online during the pandemic to explore monthly creative themes and try different ways of sharing their art, processes and inspiration with a new audience. Now they also hold regular live events, exhibitions and workshops. They often use their talents to raise money for deserving causes and particularly in support of environmental causes.
