- Gemma Lane | North Somerset Arts
Gemma Lane Painting/Drawing Gemma Lane Painting/Drawing Gemma Lane Painting/Drawing 1/1 My name is Gemma Lane. I studied Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University in the early 2000’s and then became an Art and Photography secondary teacher for 15 years. In the evenings I would explore and experiment with acrylic paint and had one of my pieces accepted in the Bath Fringe Art Exhibition in 2011. I became a mother to 2 boys in 2013 and 2016. After my second son was born I started my business Green Fox Workshops, offering art workshops in Bath, Bristol and Somerset. I now run this full time, teaching people of all ages from ages 7 up to 87. I have returned to oils and some early conceptual ideas from my university days. Preservation, the beauty in decay and that death is inevitable. The painting ‘Beauty in death’ depicts this well and is an area I am going to explore further in my own work. I am interested in the vulnerability and fragile aspects of nature and how this can be shown. I really enjoy being outdoors and seeing the changing seasons and painting with acrylics, watercolour and chalk pastels landscapes that surround me. I love the contrast of the seasons, the intense lushness of the summer, compared to the winter, where everything is dormant and more barren. I take my own reference photos or paint plein air. - Andrew Hardwick | North Somerset Arts
Andrew Hardwick Mixed Media Andrew Hardwick Mixed Media Andrew Hardwick Mixed Media 1/1 Andrew Hardwick paints places that are lost or go unnoticed. The unspectacular, the ordinary often waste lands about to be built on. His paintings are filled with these edgeland landscapes, forgotten ruins, remote reservoirs on moorland even the occasional Amazon warehouse The work follows the romantic painting tradition and can be big sometimes over four metres long-sunsets, rain, storms also fill his textured constructions. Andrew also refers to his work as constructions, because typically they use found materials, soils on board, plastics, canvas and roofing materials. As well as of course paint, often decorators gloss. Some of his images evoke the more rural landscape that he remembers from his family farm. Now existing only in his memory or as he says ghost landscapes. The work challenges our complicated relationship with the land. - Lizzie Tucker | North Somerset Arts
Lizzie Tucker Mosaic Lizzie Tucker Mosaic Lizzie Tucker Mosaic 1/1 Professional mosaicist creating wildlife-inspired mosaics. Usually made from stained glass, these wildlife mosaics feature birds, trees and animals and are represented in vibrant, modern, flowing style. Lizzie finds that the challenge is to create a piece that looks realistic in the unforgiving medium of stained glass. As glass is very rigid, it can’t be blended like paint, and compromising on glass colour is usual as there is a finite palette. Grout is crucial in creating movement and flow. Not only where the grout goes, but also the grout colour, can break a piece apart or bring it together and this is often the hardest part. Selling internationally through ETSY (www.lamosaicgifts.etsy.com), commissions are also welcome. - Chris Holden | North Somerset Arts
Chris Holden Painting/Drawing Chris Holden Painting/Drawing Chris Holden Painting/Drawing 1/1 Fine art degree course at art school in the 1960s. Then trained as a paintings conservator/restorer at the Tate Gallery in London, leading to a 35 year full time career there. On retirement became involved in the anti-war movement - the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq and motivated to try and use art to make aware and communicate the truth about what was learnt as an anti-war activist from numerous differing sources. Essentially, the art became 'political'. This felt important and normal to do this, as in the 1960s was a time of significant change; - the cold war, nuclear weapons proliferation and testing, plus the Vietnam War, which politicised many of his generation. Also family background upbringing had an influence. They were quite radical and progressive, sympathetic to the Quakers. Chris was educated at an independent co-educational Quaker boarding school from the age of 12. Father was a ww2 conscientious objector & a grandmother who had been a suffragette in the early part of the 20th Century. An uncle who had been on the front line and gassed in ww1, spent the rest of his life helping children internationally affected by war. The activist art continues today engaging with the truth about serious issues; conflicts, environment and social/political. 'Political' art has often been devalued and marginalised.
