Lizzie finds that the challenge is to create a piece that looks realistic in the unforgiving medium of stained glass. As glass is very rigid, it can’t be blended like paint, and compromising on glass colour is usual as there is a finite palette. Grout is crucial in creating movement and flow. Not only where the grout goes, but also the grout colour, can break a piece apart or bring it together and this is often the hardest part. My work is influenced by my love of clean, crisp design and simple shapes. I enjoy using pops of cheerful colour to contrast with the wood. The wooden pieces I use to make my jewellery are laser cut by a Bristol company who translate my hand drawn sketches into real life wooden shapes. I then sand, paint, varnish and assemble my jewellery by hand in my garden studio in Portishead. I also design greetings cards for all occasions. I make the original art work as paper collages, incorporating my own pattern designs, which are then digitally printed on to eco-friendly card. After graduating and subsequently getting his PhD in combustion science, he worked in industry and local government before joining the Open University as an academic. For the next few years, photography was neglected until he was given a Nikon D70 for his birthday in 2006. The love of making images was rekindled and he concentrated his spare time in developing his photographic work. He is now a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) specialising in Visual Art and he holds an EFIAP (Excellence, International Federation of Photographic Art). He was a Trustee and member of the Council of the RPS as well as Chair of its Education Committee. He Chaired the RPS Digital Imaging Group and has been editor of three of the RPS special interest Group magazines. Working in oil and watercolour the main focus of her work is landscape, seascape and nature. Her watercolour work is stylised using techniques of masking fluid, sea salt and washes to create texture and depth. By picking out the linear aspect of the countryside made by the footpaths, hedgerows and hills she produces work which has a printlike quality. Her work has been influenced by Japanese wood blocks prints. Her work in oils bring detail into the miniature scenes she creates. Clare uses a large collection of photographs and sketches of the surrounding landscape as inspiration for her paintings.
